On the nature trail…

On the nature trail
We walk into the mountains
And they, into us

(1996)

I went through a period of over 10 years in which the well went dry; I wrote only two poems between 1993 and 2005 that were worth keeping. This is one of them. It’s also the first of my haiku that I consider fully realized.

I am very likely to kick anyone who blithely tells me writer’s block isn’t real.

This poem appeared in the zen space.

  1. I love the way the mountains walk into the walkers – brilliant imagery! although I’ve never experienced writer’s block, I do believe it exists – experiencing that must be so horrific

    1. Thanks!

It was horrific and an enormous shock — I’d always assumed that brief periods of just not feeling it were what people meant by writer’s block. The very ugly joke was on me.
