Her life become marginalia…

Her life become marginalia
And a green felt hat,
She sits on her bench
Dispensing free wisdom
To a Mickey Mouse balloon.

This poem was a miracle of influence-collision. I’d looked over an exercise that offered multiple-choice questions to answer in bizarre ways as poem-starters. One of the answers to “What can you do with a balloon?” was “Give it advice.” Nothing came of the exercise right away. A few weeks later, I went into El Paso to stock up on groceries. In a park there, I saw a woman delivering an urgent lecture…to a balloon. The collision happened, and the poem right after, scribbled on the back of a receipt in my car.
